Stretchy Wraps

Stretchy wraps are my favourite for newborns and young pēpi! They are so snuggly and supportive.

There are lots of videos and instructions on how to use a stretchy wrap. One of my favourites is from Penina at Island Carrier. See Island Carrier NZ. It can feel scary at first – there’s a lot of fabric! Tūwhitia te hopo! Banish your fears. Feel the fear and do it anyway! There is a learning curve but it is worth it 🙂 Just practice lots. You can even practice before pēpi arrives.

I’ve added a step by step description as well as some troubleshooting advice. If you have any questions or need more support please get in touch.

💕 Find the centre of the wrap. Place it on your chest.

💕 Take one side of the wrap (tail) and cross it diagonally on your back. Do the same with the second tail to create a cross on your back.

💕 Put both tails through the first layer of fabric, then cross the tails.

💕 Bring the wrap around you then tie a double knot, making sure you won’t trip over the tails.

💕 Create space for pēpi. Place pēpi in the wrap, placing a fabric bunch in each knee pit.

💕 Tilt their pelvis for more comfort – holding their thighs and tipping, as if emptying a bucket in front of you.

💕 Spread each layer across baby’s back – so the wrap goes from knee to knee, and up to the nape of their neck.

💕 Find the third layer (the one going straight across), place the wrap bunch into each knee, and then pull the layer up baby’s back.

💕 You can flip the shoulder for wearer’s comfort and to keep a flow of fresh air to pēpi. You can also tuck the back of their head into one layer of the wrap to help support their head.

To remove pēpi, just go in reverse!
