I’m Nicola and I run Carry Kāpiti. I’m a māmā to Cassidy (8), Shiloh (6), and Magnolia (2) and we live in Raumati South with my lovely husband/their lovely Dad Tommy. My first child was a pāua baby and did not want to be put down ever! A stretchy wrap given to us by a friend changed my life and let me be hands free while still meeting the needs of my pēpi. I’ve been a babywearing volunteer for about 5 years now, both in Wellington and Kāpiti and in that time have trained as a peer supporter and then completed more advanced training as a consultant. I’m also a trained primary and early childhood teacher.
So that’s me! What about Carry Kāpiti? Carry Kāpiti is a voluntary organisation. We have two suitcases full of different carriers, including buckle carriers, stretchy wraps, ring slings, woven wraps, meh dai, onbuhimo, as well as a couple of babywearing jackets so you and baby can both keep warm
At our meetings you can come and try out different carriers. We often say carriers are a bit like jeans – what suits one person won’t suit another, so it’s worth trying before you buy. You are welcome to come and try while you are pregnant too! If you find a carrier or two you like, you can become a member for $10, and hire carriers for $10 each per month. Stretchy wraps are $10 for 3 months and they are so lovely with newborns and little ones, particularly over the colder months
You are also welcome to come in and get help with your own carriers – often there are a few tips and tricks that might make them more comfortable for you. I will also go over a few safety tips with you. If you are returning a carrier we ask that you bring it back at the start of the meeting so that others have the chance to try/hire.I appreciate that the meeting time and day doesn’t work for everyone, so please do get in touch if you would like to meet up outside of this time, and I can help you one on one – well Magnolia and the boys might also be around to assist! Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you would like to become a volunteer at Carry Kāpiti!
